Advantages Unlike previous systems that relied on a proprietary reader or one of a number of proprietary readers from separate vendors, EMVPro enabled merchants to accept all contactless transaction forms of payment and choose from a number of open standards-based mobile POS systems, eliminating the need to use multiple device types and cost and complexity. EMVPro works with the vast majority of existing readers from numerous vendors, to accept contactless payment from a growing number of new payment methods such as Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay, as well as adding the capability to accept contactless payments from EMV and ISO smartcards. History EMVPro was originally developed by EMV Technologies Inc. (EMV Technologies) and launched on November 1, 2011 as a joint development project with Interac, owned by Visa. In 2012, EMV Technologies Inc. was acquired by and became part of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) system. RBC Royal Bank, a joint venture between RBC and Santander Group, had originally acquired EMV Technologies Inc. in May 2008. In July 2013, Visa and EMV Technologies Inc. formed a new company, called Royal EMV Technologies Inc. In October 2014, Royal EMV Technologies Inc. announced an acquisition of Finicity, Inc., a developer of solutions to enable EMV merchants and their customers to accept mobile payments through their application on mobile devices. In January 2016, Finicity Inc. and Royal EMV Technologies Inc. announced that they had completed the acquisition of the Finicity software technology, including the company's mobile payment application. In November 2017, Finicity Inc. and Royal EMV Technologies Inc. announced that they would be partnering with the payment services provider Worldpay. The partnership would result in a platform which would allow Finicity customers to accept contactless payment from all major brands and types of bank cards and increase the merchant acceptance and adoption of EMV smartcards. In January 2018, Royal EMV Technologies Inc. announced the acquisition of the contactless smartcard application from Finicity, Inc. In September 2018, Finicity Inc. and Royal EMV Technologies Inc. announced a partnership with POS and card acceptance services provider, Ncomer. The partnership would result in a seamless integration of Finicity's mobile payment application onto the Ncomer service, enabling the acceptance of contactless payments across multiple channels, including debit, credit and prepaid.
