Material to Learn

  • Guarding Stance

    • Feet are shoulder width apart, with one foot stepped back half a step

    • Hands are guarding under chin

    • Knees are slightly bent

  • Straight Punch

    • Chambers are tight on ribcage

    • Punch is straight without wrist break

    • Strike with two front knuckles

    • Punch switch is timed correctly

  • Lead Round Kick

    • Pivot is present

    • Proper tabletop chamber with knee pointing at the target and knee/hip/shoulder in a line

    • Foot and toes are pointed

    • Hands stay up

    • Rechamber is controlled or attempted (this will vary based on age)

  • Jab

    • Front hand is used from Guarding stance

    • Punch is straight without wrist break

    • Strike with two front knuckles

    • Back hand is in guard on side of the cheek

  • Cross

    • Back hand is used from Guard

    • Punch is straight without wrist break

    • Strikes with two front knuckles

    • Front hand is in guard on side of the cheek

    • Back foot fully pivots

  • Taikyoku Part 3 & 4

    • All previous notes are still present

    • Tempo is present

    • Power and timing are being implemented

    • Kias are present in the correct places

  • Break Falls

    • Palms are down

    • Chin is tucked to avoid hitting the head

    • Knees don’t pass chest

    • Exhale forcefully (or kia) when your hand strikes the ground

    • Rolling motion is smooth (no straight backs)

  • Head movement

    • Base must remain solid

    • Motion should be initiated from the head

    • For ‘Slips’ make sure full movement off the centerline is present

    • For ‘Rolls’ make sure posture is maintained and lower is initiated from the knees

    • For ‘Rolls’ make sure the first motion is away from the punch
